When I first heard that we were going to be learning about the civil war in history the first thing that popped into my head was “here we go learning about slavery. There is only so much they can teach us about this boring war”. Well I was wrong. I learned so much more then I ever thought I could about the civil war.
For example I learned that slavery was just a minor part of the civil war. The biggest part of it was that states were succeeding. I didn’t know that states trying to leave the us were a part of it. One of the states that tried to succeed was Texas. That was how we got the 6 flags thing. (More flags= more war).
Even though the south fought hard they didn’t win many battles. The reason they didn’t win was because they had less resources then the north. For example they had more land but the north had more weapons, crops, goods, and capital. One of the causes for outbreak during the civil war was the 3/5 clause. Another was the famous case of Dred Scott v. Sanford.
The north had many strengths. Some of their biggest strengths were population, industrialization, and money. The reason that population was strength was because even though the north lost the most people they still won the war because they had the people to lose. Whereas the south didn’t have as many people fighting as the north did.
The most known battle is Gettysburg. The battle lasted 3 days and it was the bloodiest battle in the civil war. At first the confederates were doing well but then the union developed a good defense and won the battle. Gettysburg is also one of the most important battles of the civil war. After Gettysburg ended there were thousands and thousands of bodies lying around and they started to stink up the whole city because of the rain and hot weather and them decaying. So they dug big holes in the ground and just stuck a bunch of bodies in each which is where the little hills in Gettysburg came from.
Another famous battle was the battle of Vicksburg. General Hooker refused to attack the confederates head on. This in turn helped them win this battle. The word hooker comes from general hooker who would get hookers to entertain his troops when they weren’t in battle.

I can agree with you with the fact that when I first heard about Civil War, it would be boring. I wouldn’t imagine the stress President Lincoln had to try to stop states from seceding and finding good generals to suppress Confederate powers. I couldn’t imagine how the US would be if the Confederate would of won the war. It’s a good thing that slavery was ended then, though slavery most likely would end either way. It’s a great admiration at the fact that people died to free slaves and become one nation again.
I really like what you wrote about the civil war. Like you i had no idea that the main part of the civil war was about the stats succeeding and not about slavery. I also did not know about the 6 flags thing, that was really interesting to find out. I love that you included that little anecdote about General Hooker and how he entertained his troops. I hate hearing about the civil war because whenever i have learned about it, its been the same old information and very dull. Your blog kept my interest and taught me one new thing.
your blog taught me a lot like, I cant believe that slavery wasnt a major reason to the civil war. come to find out it was because of states succeeding thats why the civil war started. also general hooker giving his soldiers some extra loving in the night. and that is how the term HOOKER came about.
I can really relate to what you were saying. We're taught the Civil War almost every year of school, and this year I've been suddenly introduced to facts that I didn't know. Your blog was filled with all sorts of facts. There were some huge ones, like how exactly the war started, and how it wasn't about slavery. But then there were also subtle facts in there, too. For example, how they buried the bodies at Gettysburg, and how 'hooker' came about in the English language. Well done, Shelby!
Shelby, my dear!
Your blog has just reiterated what I've learned and continue to tell my little brothers and my mom about it. As a matter of fact, Samuel was talking about the whole Lincoln/Kennedy irony today...so I went into this long speel about what really happened to our lovely Lincoln.
I rememeber when we went to 6 Flags! Woah...if we thought it was war back in 8th grade, than man, everyone is still fighting!
More blood and gore!
Hey hey! We're all rooting for our Hooker General!
I always thought of History of being borning. Because we're always learning about the same thing! Also, I was under the impression that slavery was a huge cause of the Civil War. Haha, and it's awesome that you included the part about how HOOKER became part of our vocabulary. Nice. :)
This was a good review with a bit of commentary thrown in. I appreciate that you and your classmates believe that you have learned something new this year. I suppose that means that I am doing my job. I am fortunate to have bright and engaged learners who are willing to focus and to work when there is something new to discover. It would be interesting to know more specifically how this new knowledge has changed your outlook on the world that you currently inhabit. That's something to think about.
I really can agree with you about the whole slavery topic because I've learned bits and pieces about it ever since 5th grade. In reality, the North really could outsmart the South because of their labor, capital, and industrialization. Even though the battle of Gettysburg was so bloody, it signaled a turning point in the Civil War. It meant that the North were building enough strength that would allow them to defeat the Confederate soldiers. Wow, your blog was really well written, great job!
i agree with you. I thought the same thing about slavery. I know its important but its only but so much you can learn about slavery. But obviously it has more to it than that.
your blog was good.I also agree on what you say.i remember when i was younger that was all they talk about but Mrs. G tells it all.
I loved how you started out with your own feelings on the Civil War. It made me want to read it because it wasn't just facts thrown out there. I completely relate to what you said about slavery. Usually when they teach you about the Civil War, it's centered all around slavery, and it's annoying having to learn about it every year. I liked how you pointed out all the other things related to the war like the states seceding, the single battles, and the north's powers. Your blog was really good. :)
More flags more fun!
i like how you talked about the norths streghths and weakness and also the souths strenths and weakness.
it made me realize which side had what and what not
i really enjoyed your blog you made alot of valid points. When you think of the Civil war you think of disagreements and different views on slavery.i also liked how you gave the strengths and weeknesses of both the Confederate and the Unions side. This gave me a whole new outlook on the civil war.
I agreed with you when I heard that I was going to learn about the civil war that the whole cause was slavery. but as I keep on learning this year, I learned that the states' rights were violated and that forced them to secede. I was surprised to learn that Lincoln was the one responsible for violating the states' rights since I thought he was a great role model.
This blog showed that you learned a lot of the same things that i learned in Mrs. G's class. I also didn't know that the south was winning for about the first half of the war. The south had a lot advantages but apparently the north had a little more that helped them win.
Your blog taught me that civil war was not solely based on slavery, but was majorly about the states seceding from the United States. I am glad you pointed even though the south had high morale it did not win; due to having fewer resources than the north. I learned that Gettysburg was one of the bloodiest battles of the civil war. I also learned by General Hooker refusing to attack confederates head on they won the battle of Vicksburg. This essay was well developed, keep up the good work.
I also, like Ben, agree with you on the fact that I thought when I heard we were learning about slavery again that it was gonna be easy but boring. We have learned about slavery a lot over the past years. I, also thought as well that slavery was the main reason they fought. Yes, it was a big issue but I learned that it wasn't the only thing and you helped me realize that a bit more especially your mentioning of succession. It seems that most of the students thought slavery was the main part so this particular lesson was a good one for us.
